Haven’t heard of Pinterest? That’s okay, Pinterest has been dominated by a female user base but it’s a hot topic in social media and is really picking up speed. Sports teams have caught on to this quickly growing photo-sharing website and the New Jersey Devils are on top of it. Not only are the Devils on Pinterest, the Devils have the most original pins in all of sports with a current total of 596.
So what is a pin? To start, Pinterest is like a virtual bulletin board where you can save and organize anything you find on the web. You create boards and fill them with images by pinning anything you find and want to save for later. You can follow and be followed so people are updated on your most recent pins. You can also search Pinterest for what other users have pinned and repin things you find to put them on your own boards. Similar to Facebook, you can also Like and Comment on other users’ pins.
The Devils have created boards with team highlights, current and alumni players, and are even giving the fans a look at their beloved players before they were Devils. Anyone recognize this little guy on the right?
Where does the interaction come in? The Devils are showcasing their fan base by using their photos on Devils Army focused boards. The Devils use their Facebook and Twitter accounts to ask fans to submit their photos and they end up on the official Pinterest page. There are boards focusing on fans’ Devils Den, Lil’ Devils, Four-Legged Devils, Devils Art and photos of Devils with you, the fans! They even have a collection of devil-ish recipes under Devils Delights – everyone likes to eat, right?
The best part is knowing that Pinterest is a sponsor-free space. The Devils get no benefit from pinning things on their multiple boards. There are no sponsored spots, mentions or ticket packages advertised. They’re just there to connect with their fans and pin interesting things along the way.
