Matchup Overview

The regular season is finally upon us as the New Jersey Devils are set to face the Colorado Avalanche. This marks the first game of the season for the Devils, while the Avalanche sit at 1-0-0 following a 4-2 victory against the New York Rangers.

There a few notable scratches for the Devils today. Defensemen Ben Lovejoy and Dalton Prout will be sitting out in addition to forward Miles Wood. This means Brian Gibbons and Steve Santini will be starting in today’s game. It will be interesting to see what these youngsters can do with this largely unprecedented opportunity Coach Hynes has given.

Players to Watch

Nico Hischier- The first overall pick is making his NHL debut today after a fantastic preseason. For obvious reasons, he’s one of the key players to watch in today’s opener. The question on everyone’s mind is, how long will it take for him to make his first impact? Of course fans hope the answer is immediately. He’ll be your second line center.

Pavel Zacha- Devils fans, meet your first line center. The 20-year old did everything correctly during preseason and with the injury to Travis Zajac, earned his spot on the top line. He’s going to be taking the most face-offs of any center on the team and it’s important he maintains the success he sustained in September.

Cory Schneider- The former All-Star goaltender needs to rebound after the worst season of his career. That starts with game one as he’s given the call in-goal. Devils fans know what Schneider can do as he’s been carrying this team since his second year in a New Jersey uniform. If he can bounce back to that caliber, this team could actually become a danger throughout the year.
