New Jersey Find an Assistant Coach to replace Shaw: Mike Foligno
Lamoreillo and Pete Deboer found their replacement for Matt Shaw who was hired to improve the Devils Power Play. Shaw left after the 2013 season to take a headcoaching & general manager job in the USHL. Mike Foligno has been hired as his replacement who now has a daunting task considering the Devils now lost their key sniper, who regularly played the full 2 minutes.
Foligno coached in the OHL and that is where Deboer got to know him. From reports from Tom Gulitti of the Bergen Record, Lamoriello and Deboer had Foligno as one of their top choices from the get-go. Lamoriello and Deboer seem to have a plan.
Mike Foligno was a former NHL player who played primarily for the Buffalo Sabres. To many fans of hockey the name may sound familiar. Both his sons play in the NHL, Nick Foligno for Ottawa and Marcus Foligno for the Sabres.
Foligno has been coaching the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League from 2003 – 2010. He was able to take his team to the playoffs 6 of the 7 seasons he was head coach. He has served as assistant coach in Anaheim in 2011. It seems that he will help the Devils with the special teams, but was not released in any comments yet to the media.
