Key Dates in 2013-14 Schedule
The NHL released its schedule for the 2013-14 season after teasing its fans for the past 2 days in anticipation. The new division names were also released and are named Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan. Yes. Metropolitan. I don’t know either. I’m going to guess that means fans need to show up with opera glasses at games involving division rivals. Anyway, the Devils are going to be in the Metropolitan Division. You can see a complete schedule, and here is a list of games to watch out for this season.
October 3 at Pittsburgh – The Devils start their season with the defending division champions. It’s the first game so the ramifications are basically zero but, hey, it’s the beginning of the season!
October 4 vs. NY Islanders – Home opener. The Islanders took a huge step forward in their development and if not for a goaltending change from their opponent, would’ve knocked off the Penguins in the first round. Can they keep it up? Only time will tell.
October 8 at Vancouver – This will be new goaltender Cory Schneider’s return to the city that jettisoned him off at the draft. I can bet a bajillion million dollars he will be starting this game. This also is in the middle of the Devils longest road trip of the season as they make their way through Canada over the course of 5 games. The Devils also take flight to hit all of the California teams around Thanksgiving. To get those cross-country trips out of the way will help out big time as the home stretch comes.
November 15 vs Los Angeles – This is the rematch we were robbed of last year because of the silly lockout. The Kings come into the Rock with mostly the same team that won the Cup in 2012. The Devils, on the other hand, will have quite a few new players and a new identity.
January 26 vs New York Rangers – I didn’t include the first game against the Devils’ biggest rival because those games are being dwarfed by the anticipation around this game. This will be part of the NHL Stadium Series as it’s played outdoors at Yankee Stadium. Hopefully both teams will be in good form and give the 50,000 fans at the Stadium a show that they will remember forever. These are the two teams that fight with Calgary-Edmonton for 2nd best rivalry in the NHL (no one is beating Boston-Montreal). This will just enhance that rivalry in the best way possible.
February 27 vs Columbus – This will be the first games after the 2-plus week break for the Olympics in Sochi, Russia where the US Olympic team will triumphantly bring home the Gold Medal. Just wanted to point out those 2 things with this game.
March 20 vs Minnesota – I think we all know why this game is important. That’s right! Kyle Brodziak is comin’ to town!!! This is also game 2 of the longest homestand of the season for the Devils (5 games).
April 13 vs Boston – This is game 82 of the schedule. Hopefully this will not be the last game of the 2013-14 season for our beloved Devils. There are many, many question marks coming into the year and with the schedule more weighted on division play, this could be one weird, wacky season.
