The Devils in the Details will be a weekly post, looking back on the stats from your New Jersey Devils in their past week of play. Games between Sunday and Saturday from every week will be highlighted, with stats like Goals, Assists, PIM, Shots, etc. being the main focus. This week, we take a look at the Devils between March 10 and March 16, a week that saw the Devils vastly improve over their recent play. The team went 2-1-1, including a strong 5-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers. The Devils also went 1-1 in the shootout, winning against Winnipeg, and falling to the Flyers. The Devils only regulation loss came to Montreal on Saturday evening, 2-1.
Goal-scoring was much more evenly spread out this past week, with 7 players each scoring one goal, and Adam Henrique registering two, both against the Philadelphia Flyers. Ilya Kovalchuk and Marek Zidlicky were the only Devils to register multiple assists, with 10 other Devils registering one assist on the week. This balanced, spread-out offense from the Devils was a large factor in their success this past week and will be what they target in the coming weeks before the playoffs start.
Surprisingly, Kovalchuk did not lead the team in shots this week. That title belongs to David Clarkson, who was fueled by 8 shots against the Flyers on Friday night, a game in which he broke his 13-game goal-less streak. The Devils were also much more disciplined this week, with the team taking no fighting majors, and only three players getting more than 2 minutes in the four games.
Johan Hedberg played a much more confident style of hockey than we saw from him during the losing streak. Hedberg went 2-1-1 this week, starting all four games, and finished with a 1.69 GAA, and 0.926 save percentage. Hedberg was called upon to make some huge saves in all four games this week, and answered the bell every time. Hedberg will look to continue this style of play to help the Devils in the final half of the season.
I don’t really have a Shocking Stat for everyone this week, sadly. Although I guess that’s a good thing, since it means all is normal on the Devils’ end. Ilya Kovalchuk and Anton Volchenkov led the team in Plus-Minus, both finishing with a +2. The Devils also registered 3 special teams goals this week, once while shorthanded, and twice on the power-play.
