Game 13 Recap – Blown Away – Devils 2 – Hurricanes 4
The Devils had their 5 game winning streak snapped tonight as the Carolina Hurricanes came into Newark and thoroughly outplayed the Devils in a 4-2 victory. Not much can be said about the Devils’ effort that the final score doesn’t reflect. They did get a goal with 4 minutes left in the 1st as a blast by Ilya Kovalchuk snuck under the crossbar and his the back bar before rocketing out of the net. It was so hard and so fast that it needed to be reviewed. Problem was there was no whistle for another 3 and a half minutes. So everyone was treated to a rare 24 minute first period. The goal was reviewed and counted and the time elapsed was then put back on the scoreboard as the two teams finished the period.
Despite holding a 1-0 lead, the Hurricanes outplayed the Devils most of that period. And then it all fell apart in the second. Carolina tied the game on a power play goal by Jussi Jokinen after a shot-pass by Joe Corvo got Martin Brodeur completely out of position that he barely reacted when Jokinen shot the puck into the gaping net. Once again, even though it was a tie game, it certainly did not feel that way. Carolina took the lead late in the 2nd as a Jay Harrison laser from the point was deflected home by Patrick Dwyer.
The Devils came out of the intermission with a purpose. They did not play their style of game for the first 2 periods, but that changed early in the 3rd as constant pressure led to Ryan Carter taking the puck away from Justin Faulk and potting the tying goal home just a minute and a half into the final frame. The Devils continued the pressure and came close quite a few times. However the Devils would give the lead right back to the ‘Canes as Jiri Tlusty was left all alone in front of the net and scored Carolina’s second power play goal at 7:25 of the third. The Devils did not quit however and had many many chances, especially late in the 3rd with the goalie pulled as the puck sat right near the goal line and Bobby Butler could not cash in on the opportunity as he was too far away and that allowed Cam Ward to get over and stop any chance at the game tying goal. Tlusty would then fire home an empty net goal to give Carolina the aforementioned 4-2 victory.
It was not a pretty game by any means for the Devils. The penalty kill was sloppy, the agressive forecheck never got established, and the team looked frustrated by the play of Carolina. Whether it was coming down from the high of beating the Penguins 2 games in a row, or not having more than 1 day off between games since the first week of the season, the Devils look like they can need a day off. And as luck would have it, they don’t have a game until Friday as the Flyers come to The Rock. So hopefully they can dust themselves off, pick themselves up, and destroy the team just 90 miles away. See you Friday, fans!
Three Stars of the Game as chosen by ME!
3. Jussi Jokinen (1g) – Got the Canes going with his PPG in the 2nd
2. Cam Ward - Shut the door on the Devils chances in the third. When Ward is on his game he is incredibly tough to beat.
1. Jiri Tlusty (2g) - Two goals from the winger on Eric Staal’s line and put the nail in the coffin on this game by himself with the last 2 goals of the game
