Game 4 Recap – Breaking the Winning Hab-it: Devils 3 – Montreal 4 (OT)

New Jersey Devils vs Montreal Canadiens

The Devils suffered their first loss of the 2013 campaign as they fell to the Canadiens by a score of 4-3. The Devils were bit badly by their 4th straight sub-par 1st period as the Habs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Ryan White cashed in on a rebound after a strong start by Montreal for most of the first 3 minutes. The Devils were able to settle the game down, however defenseman Andy Greene made a bad turnover and star rookie Alex Galchenyuk fired a laser pass over to fellow rookie Brendan Gallagher who rifled the puck past Brodeur to give the home side a 2-0 lead. The Devils tried getting back into the game but were snake bitten by their own undisciplined play.

The Devils played a much better period in the 2nd as they played at their pace and it paid off as they got back into the game on a goal by Patrik Elias. Mark Fayne threw the puck at the net and Patrik Elias made a gorgeous bunt-style tip to make the score 2-1. The Devils almost tied it up as Ilya Kovalchuk was sent in on a breakaway but he was bothered heavily by backcheckers and did not get off a great shot as the teams went onto the 3rd.

The 3rd got off to a bad start as Jacob Josefson turned over the puck at the blue line and Brandon Prust knocked home a deflected puck sent off the stick of an Alex Galchenyuk shot. The Devils eventually would get a 5-on-3 PP for a full 2 minutes and David Clarkson cashed in with a goal assisted by Patrik Elias to bring the Devils within 1 goal. Travis Zajac just missed tying the game in a scramble in front on the back end of the power play. Soon after, Patrik Elias hustled his butt off to beat out an icing and then fed the puck in front for Dainius Zubrus who fires it past Carey Price for a goal that the Montreal goalie would like to have back. That Zubrus goal also gave Elias his 900th point in his outstanding 16 year career. The Devils almost gave away the game very late in the 3rd but Rene Bourque missed the net and both teams headed to overtime.

Early in the overtime, Kovalchuk came down on a 3-on-1 and unfortunately pinged one off the inside part of the post and the puck went behind Price to keep the game going. Then with just under a minute to go, a – let’s call it “questionable” to be nice – penalty was called on Andy Greene for “holding” Erik Cole. I personally did not know that muscling a man off the puck with one arm constituted a holding penalty, but Greene was off to the box. It was soon after that Andrei Markov took advantage of a fallen Martin Brodeur and popped in a rebound to give the Canadiens their 3rd win of the season.

The Devils fought back valiantly to tie this game, although if you don’t play for a full 60 minutes, which the Devils did not, you shouldn’t expect to win. However to lose on a very questionable call hurts. But with the short season you need to have an equally short memory. The Devils took another point out of this game giving them 7 on the year. 7 out of a possible 8 in the first week is not a bad way to go.

Three Stars of the Game according to ME:
1. Patrik Elias
2. Alex Galchenyuk
3. Andrei Markov
