Rivals Join Together for Hurricane Relief

When the New Jersey Devils beat the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference Finals this past May, everyone anticipated the rematch between Martin Brodeur and Henrik Lundqvist. Little did fans know that it would occur almost six months to the day of Adam Henrique’s series winning goal, that the venue would be Atlantic City, and that the purpose of the game would be  raising money for victims of a hurricane that rocked the shores of New Jersey and New York.

Almost 10,800 fans came out to Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday night to see Brodeur, Lundqvist, and 32 other NHL players in Operation Hat Trick, a charity game that supported the American Red Cross, the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund, and the Empire State Relief Fund.

Brodeur was in net for Team New Jersey, which was captained by Scott Hartnell of the Philadelphia Flyers. Joining Brodeur were fellow Devils David Clarkson and Andy Greene. Lundqvist was in goal for Team New York, which was captained by Brad Richards of the Rangers.

In the end, Brodeur and Team New Jersey lost to Team New York 10-6. Brodeur faced 45 shots on goal, while Lundqvist faced a whopping 63 shots on goal. Although the Devils players came out on the losing end, each found their way on the score sheet. Andy Greene scored the team’s fifth goal, with a secondary assist from Brodeur. David Clarkson scored the team’s sixth goal.

However, the most important stat of all is the amount raised for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Final totals have not been released because game-worn jerseys are being auctioned by Steiner Sports.

And for one night, fans had hockey back again. While fans of the Flyers, Rangers, and Devils can’t agree on much, everyone in Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night agreed on one thing — they want hockey back. Throughout the game, fans chanted “WE WANT HOCKEY” and “FIRE BETTMAN”! And as the fans walked out Saturday night, everyone hoped that this would not be the last they saw of hockey for a long time.
