2011-12 New Jersey Devils Schedule: Games To Watch For
Ever since that Sunday in April, Devils fans were chomping at the bit to know when they’d get their hockey back. Well wait no more! October 8, 2011 is the day we can all return to The Rock as the Devils take on the Flyers. In addition to that game I’ve listed some of the more important games to look forward to this year.
October 8th vs. Flyers - It’s opening night! The first game of the year with so much promise. Let’s hope it goes even better than the awesome 10 minutes we started with last year. And let’s hope it all continues through June of 2012. Plus maybe we’ll get to see the shiny new draft pick we get tonight play in his first game! Welcome Adam/Gabriel/Ryan/Jonathan as they don the red and black. A big division game too as Ilya Bryzgalov, Chris Pronger, and 16 other guys under 25 go against the Devils and give it the ol’ college try, since that’s where most of the team will be coming out from this year.
November 5th vs. Winnipeg – The Jets (at least I hope so as they haven’t announced a name as I’m writing this) will be traveling to New Jersey for the first time since 1996. It’s an exciting time for hockey fans as the game is back in the ‘Peg after a sad exit 15 years ago. We will see them 4 times this year as there won’t be realignment until next season when they move to the Western Conference. Here’s hoping we see those awesome old school uni’s.
December 20th vs. Rangers - There are very few games that Devils fans look for immediately when the schedule comes out. The first game against the Rangers is one of those games. Surprisingly, this is a late date for the first game between the two hated rivals. Let’s all welcome our rival with open arms and hope for a spirited match of hockey where we all have fun! Just kidding…I hope we win 10 to negative 2.
December 31st vs. Penguins – A nice New Year’s Eve matinee to send 2011 away as it’s the first time we get to face Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. This team was good last year and they didn’t have Crosby or Malkin. Scary to think what they’ll be like this year.
January 4th vs. Bruins – The Stanley Cup champions come into town to face the Devils. With most, if not all, of the team returning next year this could be an exciting game against the Devils. I do hope that Zdeno Chara and Mattias Tedenby get into a few scuffles. It was always hilarious when Brian Gionta and Chara would go at it. They did quite a few times and Gio never backed down. Teddy needs to fill that void.
January 17th vs. Winnipeg – Yes the Jets (fingers crossed) are back but that’s not why I put this here. This is the start of a 6 game homestand that spans over 17 days. Why is this important? This is like having a bye week in Week 10 of the NFL. You’re home during a long season for a long time. There is also a week off built in during the homestand because of the All-Star Game. It gives guys time to heal up from injuries, relax, and not have to deal with the rigors of traveling right before the home stretch. This could be a key time for the Devils to gain some ground in the East and Atlantic if they need to.
February 17th vs. Ducks – There has been some scuttlebutt as to whether this could be the night the Devils retire long-time defenseman Scott Niedermayer’s 27. I, for one, hope it does happen. There’s not much to say that hasn’t been already so I’ll just put this year to reminisce and enjoy…
March 17 vs. Penguins - The St. Patty’s Day game is back and more than likely that means the retro jerseys will be out during the afternoon matinee. I enjoyed retro night the first time it was on St. Patty’s Day. The last 2 games at home on this day have been pretty memorable with Marty’s 552 and the first retro game, respectively. Here’s hoping this one is just as memorable.
April 7th vs. Senators – The last game of the season. Check that, the REGULAR season. I full expect our team to make the playoffs, barring crazy injuries of course. This is always the game where we just mentally prepare ourselves for the tense OMIGOD DUDE!! moments that the Stanley Cup Playoffs bring.
June 20th: Stanley Cup Parade – BE THERE!!!
Well there you have it. Get to planning folks. I hope to see you all at The Rock this year. I’ll be taking attendance. I mean it.
